God Supplies our Need

Matthew 6:25-34, Luke 12:22-32

God's Word has many promises that are given to Christians. Today we are going to look look one of these promises.

How many of you have ever been worried, anxious, or fretted about something. Do you know God does not want us to? Philippines 4:6 says, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” In other words, pray about it! Give it to God. He wants us to trust Him!

In Matthew 6 and again in Luke 12, Jesus give us several examples in nature of God taking care of things.

1. God provides for our food

Jesus used the example of the fowl of the air or birds. They don't plant a crop, or gather things in barns for the winter, but yet God feeds them. This is a picture of sparrows. In Matthew 10: 29-31, Jesus said God knows when a sparrow falls to the ground. Matthew 10:31 says, "Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows." If God takes care of theses little birdies, He can take care of us too.

2. God provides our clothing

In Matthew 6:28a Jesus asks the question, “And why take ye thought for raiment?” Jesus said don't worry about having clothes to wear. He tells us to consider the lilies of the field. They don't make their clothes. They don't weave or spin material, but yet with all of King Solomon riches he didn't have clothing as beautiful as a lily. God clothes the grass of the field which is here today and gone tomorrow. Will not God take care of you?

Our Heavenly Father knows we have need of all these thing. But God wants us to realize there are more important things in life then eating and wearing clothes. These are temporal things. You eat the food and its gone, you grow and you need bigger clothes. God does not want us to be so worried about things that pass away – food goes bad and clothes gets holes in them.

Matthew 6:19-21

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

God does not want us to strive for things. We need to work and be diligent in our business, but God wants us to be busier laying up treasures in Heaven than our earthly bank accounts.

This is God's promise in Matthew 6:33: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

What things will be added unto you? Our needs – food and clothing. But look at God's condition – Seek ye FIRST the kingdom of God. God wants you to put Him first in your life and then He will take care of the rest. How are some ways that we can put God first? (see if children know some ways) Bible reading, prayer, going to church, tithing, telling others about Jesus, giving God our time to memorize verses etc..

3. God provided Peter's taxes

In Matthew 17:24-27, we have an example of God providing Peter's needs. Peter left his fishing boat to follow Jesus. Fishing was how he made a living and took care of his family. But when Jesus called him, he forsook all and followed Christ. Peter put God first, didn't he? When tax time came, the tax collectors asked Peter about Jesus' taxes.

Jesus told Peter to go to the sea and cast an hook. He didn't say a net, or to launch a boat but one hook. Jesus said the first fish you pull up, open his mouth and there you will find a piece of money and go pay your taxes and mine.

I am so glad God knows our needs! When we keep our eyes on Him He takes care of us. It may not be how we think it should happen and sometimes God lets us wait to increase our faith.

May be you would say God has not supplied your needs. You asked for something and He did not provide. Was is it really a need or just a want? Is a new bike really a need when your old one still works?

You also have to remember what God said – you have to seek Him first. Is God first in your life? Do you even know God? Are you a child of God? If God is not your Heavenly Father He wants to be today. (See verses about Salvation here.)
